BRIDGES

Project description

Empowering School and Cultural Libraries’ Volunteers and Supporting Educators to Tackle Special Educational Needs of Kids from Families with Disadvantaged Backgrounds

The BRIDGES project aims to strengthen cooperation between schools and cultural centres (such as libraries) to better support children with special educational needs (SEN), particularly those from migrant or socio-economically disadvantaged families. It focuses on training teachers, librarians, and volunteers to recognise early signs of learning difficulties and to create inclusive, accessible educational environments. The project also develops shared tools and digital resources to connect educators, families, and cultural institutions in promoting literacy and inclusion.

BRIDGES introduces a low-cost, community-based model for early SEN detection and inclusive learning. By transforming libraries and cultural centres into active partners in education, it broadens access to learning opportunities, promotes social inclusion, and improves collaboration among schools, families, and communities. The project’s long-term impact lies in fostering inclusive education systems where every child—regardless of background or ability—can thrive.

Project objectives

1. Enhance the capacity of libraries and cultural centres
Strengthen their ability to support children with Special Educational Needs (SEN)—especially from disadvantaged or migrant backgrounds—by developing inclusive educational practices and frameworks.

2. Develop high-quality educational resources and digital collaboration tools
Create training materials and an online platform that connect school staff, librarians, and cultural educators to share best practices and inclusive teaching resources.

3. Raise awareness and involve families from disadvantaged backgrounds
Foster collaboration between schools, libraries, and families to build inclusive, community-based learning environments that promote literacy, early intervention, and family engagement.
