Pictomix

Project description

Pictomix is an Erasmus+ cooperation partnership in the field of Adult Education. The project aims to facilitate language learning and access to culture for adults with significant reading difficulties, including non-native speakers (migrants, refugees), individuals with illiteracy, and Deaf people.

To achieve this, the project proposes an innovative approach that moves from images and oral language toward written language. It utilizes narrative murals (frescoes) inspired by European myths and legends as the primary pedagogical tool, reducing the cognitive load associated with text and favoring intuitive understanding through pictograms.

Project objectives

The project has three specific objectives aimed at fostering inclusion and digital transformation:

  1. Promote inclusion and accessibility in adult education: To create tools specifically adapted for non-readers and those with little exposure to the written word, favoring visual and multimodal approaches.
  2. Develop accessible and innovative educational resources: To design narrative murals, accompanying booklets, and structured educational pathways that allow for progressive learning from images to structured language.
  3. Equip educators with innovative digital resources: To provide trainers with an online platform, digital games, and tutorials to support them in using these inclusive methods.

Project results

The project will produce several tangible resources:

  • Pictomix Frescoes (Murals): Five narrative murals based on European myths, produced in two formats:
    • Printed: Concertina books (leporellos) using high-contrast black and white pictograms.
    • Digital: An interactive, scrolling web format.
  • Story Booklets: Five booklets accompanying the frescoes, featuring the story in pictograms (inspired by Makaton) on one side and in Easy to Read and Understand (FALC) text on the other.
  • Multimodal Adaptations: The materials will include multilingual audio soundtracks and video adaptations in Sign Language.
  • Digital Educational Tools: An online platform hosting a visual dictionary of pictograms, interactive games (flashcards, quizzes), and a digital tutorial for trainers.
  • Pedagogical Guide: A comprehensive guide detailing methodologies and best practices for using the materials in various contexts (prisons, libraries, social centers).
  • Training Activity: A European training course for educators held in Tarragona, Spain
